TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Driver Online Welfare Coalition (KKDO) Indonesia feels that the company’s relationship with drivers will be like employers and workers when switching to a transportation company. So the KKDO rejected the government’s plan to change the status of transportation applicator companies (online taxis) into transportation companies.
“So far, with the principle of partnership, they have taken on the role as if they were a transportation company. The government did not take any response actions,” KKDO Indonesia Action Coordinator Alexander said when contacted by Tempo, Tuesday, April 17, 2018.
Previously, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi obliged Grab and Go-Jek to become transportation companies, not vendors, as had been done so far. The reason is that the company provides wages to the driver and arranges operational activities.
KKDO Indonesia consists of drivers of four-wheeled transportation based applications, aka online taxis from Grab and Go-Jek. They took action in the Grab and Go-Jek offices, yesterday, April 16, 2018.
KKDO Indonesia filed three demands regarding the welfare of online taxi drivers. One of his demands was to reject Grab and Go-Jek as a transportation company.
According to Alexander, application companies are different from transportation companies. With the status of the application company, clearly Alexander, Grab and Go-Jek only act as application providers to connect drivers and consumers.
While transportation companies mean companies need to provide vehicles, recruit drivers, and provide bonus fees or rates. Alexander refers to Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation.
“If it is considered to be a transportation company, it is certainly a wrong step because the online drivers are independent who have vehicles or transportation and equipment for travel as their work tools,” Alexander explained. “So how can the drivers become transportation company workers?” he continued.
